A New Milan Festival Will Screen the Best AI Fashion Films and Design Work in April
The first Milan AI Festival opens eight categories to AI-made fashion film, design, architecture and narrative shorts. Entries close 15 February 2027, with trophies and a live Milan screening, but no cash.
Milan is better known for runways and furniture fairs than for film festivals, and the organisers of the first Milan AI Festival are leaning into that. The competition, branded VIA, the Visual Innovation Awards, has built its eight categories around fashion film, design, architecture and narrative shorts, with winners screened live in the city on 15 April 2027.
The team behind it also runs the Rome and Florence AI Festivals, so this is a new city for an existing network rather than a first-time venture. Entry is open worldwide to anyone aged 18 or over, and any generative AI tool is permitted. If your work sits closer to a lookbook or a spatial concept than a conventional short story, this is one of the few AI competitions that has made room for it.
The official listing is on AI Film Contests, and entries are made through FilmFreeway.
What you submit
The festival runs eight categories. The listing names fashion film, design, architecture and narrative shorts among them, and the tracker shows Short Film, Experimental and Commercial as tagged formats. The full list of eight is on the FilmFreeway page, so check it before choosing where to enter.
The eligibility rules are straightforward:
- Projects must have been completed after 1 January 2025.
- Non-English films need English subtitles.
- The Student Film category requires proof of enrolment.
- Entrants must be 18 or over, from anywhere in the world.
Submissions opened on 16 October 2026. Fees are charged per category, so entering one film in two categories means paying twice.
Prize structure
There is no stated cash prize, and that should shape how you weigh this one. What is on offer is recognition and a screening:
- Each of the eight categories awards a trophy, a laurel and a place in the Milan screening.
- A Best of Festival trophy is chosen across all eight categories.
- Special Mentions are given for Direction, Visual Craft, Sound and Music, and Production Design.
The value here is exposure in a fashion and design capital, with a room of people from those industries, and laurels for your reel. If you need funding or prize money to make the entry worthwhile, look elsewhere.
Deadlines and fees
There are three deadline tiers, and the price rises as the date moves later:
- Regular deadline: 15 December 2026.
- Late deadline: 15 January 2027.
- Extended deadline: 15 February 2027.
Fees run from $5 at the Earlybird stage to $15 at the Extended deadline, per category, with a reduced Student rate. The listing does not publish a cutoff time or timezone for any of the deadlines, so submit with a day in hand, particularly if you are entering on the final date.
Terms worth reading
The listing does not summarise the festival's rights terms, and we have not seen them. Entry is paid, so read the full terms on the FilmFreeway page before you submit, paying attention to any licence granted for screening, promotion or online display, and to whether your work will be shown publicly before the event. Do this before paying, not after.
The fee is the only cost stated on the listing, and it is small. The practical decision is whether trophies, laurels and a Milan screening justify an entry fee and the time to prepare a subtitled, finished piece.
To enter, go to the FilmFreeway entry page, choose your category, and pay the fee for the tier current on the day you submit. The earliest tier is the cheapest.
