Hong Kong Baptist University's School of Creative Arts has recast its long-running Global University Film Awards, which earned the nickname the "University Oscars" over years of international student competition, into something called the Future Film Fest, or 3F. The 2026 edition introduces a dedicated AI Shorts category, separating generative-AI work from the broader narrative shorts programme and putting real cash behind it: USD 5,000 for Best AI Short and a USD 3,000 Jury Recommendation Award, both sitting inside a total prize pool of USD 66,000 across all categories.

The festival positions itself as AI-native in intent, not just AI-tolerant. Submissions to the AI Shorts category must use generative AI as the core production mechanism. Work that is predominantly live-action and only lightly touched by AI tools is explicitly excluded. If your film is built around AI-generated visuals, audio, or both, this category is designed to receive it. Entry is handled through FilmFreeway, and the page advises confirming all details there before submitting, particularly around entry fees, which are not listed on the HKBU festival page itself.

What to submit

Short films made by directors aged 30 or under as of 31 December 2026, currently enrolled at or recently graduated from a recognised post-secondary institution anywhere in the world. Works must have been completed after 1 January 2025. Any generative AI toolset is permitted. Submissions open from 1 June 2026 and close on 31 October 2026; no cutoff time is published, so plan to submit at least a day ahead.

Prize structure

The AI Shorts category carries two awards:

- Best AI Short: USD 5,000 cash
- Jury Recommendation Award: USD 3,000 cash

The wider festival also awards USD 15,000 each for Best Short in Chinese-Language and Non-Chinese-Language Narrative Shorts, plus a USD 10,000 Jury Recommendation in those categories. Total pool across all categories is USD 66,000.

Terms worth reading

The festival entry page is hosted on FilmFreeway, and entry fees, if any, will be listed there. The HKBU page does not state fees, so check before submitting. Eligibility is age-gated at 30 and tied to current or alumni post-secondary status, which means independent filmmakers outside academia are not eligible regardless of age. The page notes that the deadline shown is a best-effort estimate and that FilmFreeway should be treated as the authoritative source. No rights-grab or broad licence clause is disclosed on the contest page, but festival submissions commonly carry screening permissions, so read the FilmFreeway submission agreement carefully before uploading your work.

Apply through the official FilmFreeway entry page. Full contest details are on the HKBU Future Film Fest 2026 page.
