Runway has landed natively inside Premiere Pro and After Effects via new plugins, letting editors generate, edit and upscale footage without switching apps. For working AI filmmakers, the context-switch tax between generation tool and timeline just disappeared.

The workflow tax has always been the same: generate a shot in Runway, export it, drag it into Premiere, decide you want a different angle, switch back to Runway, wait, re-export, drag it in again. That loop is not dramatic. It is just relentless, and it accumulates across a full edit into something that genuinely slows production. As of 8 September 2026, @runwayml has closed that loop. Runway is now natively available inside both Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects as dedicated plugins, letting editors generate, edit and upscale without touching another application.

The implications for day-to-day AI film production are immediate and concrete. You can stay in your timeline. You can respond to a director's note, generate a replacement shot, and drop it in place without a single export. That is not a marginal improvement in convenience. For productions that iterate heavily on AI-generated material, it compresses what used to be a three-application bounce into a single window.

What the plugins actually do

The announcement covers three core capabilities: generation, editing, and upscaling, all accessible from within the Adobe host applications. The generation side means you can create new shots directly from inside the timeline, presumably using Runway's existing text-to-video and image-to-video models. The editing capability suggests in-context manipulation of clips, though the precise scope of what can be edited, and which Runway models underpin each function, has not been specified in detail. Upscaling inside Premiere is the feature with the most immediately obvious utility: finishing a timeline in 4K from AI-generated material that started at a lower resolution, without exporting to a separate tool.

What was not said

Runway has not specified which of its model generations (Gen-4, or more recent releases) power the in-Adobe generation. No pricing has been announced for the plugin tier. It is not yet clear whether a standard Runway subscription covers plugin access, or whether it requires an upgraded plan. There is no confirmed release date for a stable general availability build versus a limited rollout, so if you are reading this on day one, check the plugin page for current access status. Runway also has not stated whether the plugin supports After Effects-specific compositing workflows such as integration with masks, adjustment layers, or motion tracking data.

How this sits against the current alternatives

Before this launch, the most common workaround for keeping AI generation close to an edit was the Premiere panel approach used by a handful of third-party tools, or simply keeping a second monitor dedicated to a browser tab. Topaz Starlight for Web moved upscaling into the browser earlier this year, which helped on the output side. Runway's move is more fundamental: it brings generation itself into the host application rather than requiring a round-trip. The closest precedent in the traditional VFX world is how After Effects absorbed certain Mocha tracking capabilities over time. Generation, not just processing, inside the NLE is a different order of integration.

What to test first

If you get access today, the single most useful thing to test is the upscaling path. Take a sequence you have already completed with AI-generated shots at a lower resolution and run the Premiere plugin upscale on it inside the timeline. Measure the time saved against your usual Topaz or external Runway workflow. That will give you the most concrete sense of whether the integration is genuinely lossless in quality terms, or whether the convenience involves a trade-off.

For generation, test iterative replacement: pick a shot in an existing cut, use the plugin to regenerate a variant, and see how seamlessly it lands back in context. The test that matters for AI filmmakers is not whether the output looks good in isolation. It is whether the roundtrip from decision to new clip on the timeline is genuinely faster than the previous app-switching workflow.

Upscaling and editing quality in context are the two unknowns that real-world testing will resolve. The principle is sound. The execution is what the next few weeks of creator feedback will determine.
